Thoughts

On Mac OS 10.7, otherwise known as Lion: So far I’m liking it, although I really haven’t gotten to delve into the newness of it too much yet. Except for the natural scrolling “feature” that was introduced. That one I got thrown into headfirst. Basically, Apple has changed scrolling with Lion to mimic the way it’s done with iOS. So instead of moving your fingers or mouse wheel down to scroll down a page, you are pushing the page up or pulling it down. It definitely felt more natural to me when using the trackpad (and, therefore, my fingers) than when using the mouse, but I think I’m about used to it now.

On the weather (because that’s all Middle Tennesseans talk about these days): It’s really goddamn hot. It’s been in the upper 90s for what seems like years now, and the humidity is about a billion percent. And for some reason my allergies are really, really bad this year. So bad that I’ve started doubling my dose of Zyrtec again, something my doctor told me to do one time in the past when I had a bad cold and that caused me to hallucinate and feel like I was walking around in a fog. So far I haven’t hallucinated or heard any voices, but I do feel pretty dizzy and out of it. We’ll see what happens.

On the cats: Somehow King Boo has won over Gordo, who, as you might remember, has hated him with a fiery passion of a thousand suns dipped in hatesauce since the day we brought him home. But we’ve caught Gordo grooming King Boo from time to time, and every morning they have Cat Wrestlemania in the bedroom and Gordo appears to be playing, not actually trying to kill King Boo. So, you know, progress. I’d also like to say a big fat I TOLD YOU SO to all of the haters in the house. I was the only one who liked King Boo when we brought him home, and now he’s won over every single living entity in the house except for Evil Twin, but he sucks and doesn’t count.

On jobs: My new job is still going swimmingly and sometimes I have to pinch myself. I’m starting to get some more responsibilities and pulled into various projects that have been pretty fun. And I still get tickled that I can mention a video game or some weird nerdy meme and not only do these people know what it is, they probably knew about it before I did. I am feeling more at home every day.

And Ian’s doing quite well in the job department, too, as he recently got a really big promotion and is now heading up the department where he’s worked for the last four years. He even has to wear a state-issued cellphone on his belt! Who’s the nerd now?! (Yeah, still me. I know.)

The bathroom sitch gets a bit interesting

Things I’m still getting used to at the new gig:

  • A seemingly endless supply of snacks, including Red Bull, which I’m apparently now addicted to. Also, there always seems to be cake around here.
  • Being able to wear jeans, a t-shirt and my old, beat-up Chucks and not receive that “It must be laundry day for you” look when I walk in.
  • Sharing one bathroom—one commode—with about 12 other people. Most of them guys.
  • Finding bird poop on my car every day (no more garage).
  • Not feeling embarrassed about my car (no more garage—that was filled with Lexuses and Mercedes and my little Civ felt out of place sometimes).
  • Being able to discuss specific video games with co-workers and not only do they know what I’m talking about, they have recommendations on similar games I might like, too.
  • No longer being the biggest nerd in the room at any given time.

I do miss my friends at my old job, but this one is shaping up pretty nicely.

The new

I’ve been bad at updating lately, which I realize bothers nobody but me. But I’ve been strangely busy—I’ve been in a “I don’t have time to blog about stuff because I’m out doing it” mood the last few weeks, I suppose.

I guess the biggest news is that I started a new job. After five and a half years at Hammock Inc., first as a writer and then as the digital media manager, I have started at Raven Internet Marketing Tools as a user support specialist.

As excited I am to be part of such an innovative, geeky team at Raven, I have to point out that it wasn’t an easy decision to leave Hammock. I enjoyed what I did there, and I made some great friends (I’m looking at you, wolfpack!). And Rex, the founder/CEO, was so great to work for and with. He’s a brilliant, mad-scientist kind of guy who just gets it, and I really appreciate all that I learned from him.

But over my last couple of years there, I realized that development is where I am headed. I’ll always consider myself a writer at heart, but work-wise I keep gravitating more and more to coding. And if I want to get serious about learning and really pursuing that path, what’s better than working right in the middle of a bunch of developers every day? And Raven is a great, growing company with amazing people working there, and I’m really excited to have been invited to be a part of their team. Last week was my first week there and I’m already having a blast.

And, quite honestly, when they were described to me as the “island of misfit toys” I knew it was someplace I belonged.

Moving on

Moving on

Last Thursday, I helped move our office from the 7th floor down to a new space on the 1st floor. Our company had occupied the previous space for 15 years, I believe, so there was a lot to organize, sort through, pack and then move. Luckily we had movers to take care of the really heavy stuff, but as with any move, there was still a ton left to be done. I was mainly in charge of moving computers, monitors, phones and peripherals, and then setting up everyone’s phones and computers. Well, and any other random things that needed setting up, moving, or throwing away.

But as for the picture above: For the last five years, this is the view I saw when I looked out the window in the kitchen. At some point during my first week here, I looked out the window while I was microwaving my lunch and noticed what I thought was a paint can left on the roof of the apartment building below. Soon I came to realize that it was a can of tar.

And almost every day since, over the past five years, I have looked out that kitchen window down onto the top of this apartment building. Onto that can of tar. Or whatever it is. And it’s probably really silly and weird, but it’s been a constant in my work life, something I can count on being there every day. And now I’m not going to see it anymore.

I guess that sounds melodramatic. I’m not really upset; just nostalgic a bit, I guess. I’ve been at this job a long time, and although it’s changed a lot since the first day I started, it’s helped define a big part of who I am. In a good way.

So goodbye, tar can. Goodbye views of 440E that allowed me to see just how shitty my commute home was going to be. Goodbye 7th story view of the sky that scared the shit out of me when storms were coming, or that inspired me on clear days when I could see for miles out over treetops.

And hello new beginning.

March 5 | Hot Diggity Dog

March 5 | Hot Diggity Dog

This morning at work we spotted (from our 7th floor windows) the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile was in the Dairy Queen parking lot across from our office building, so naturally six of us took off after it. Unfortunately by the time we got all the way downstairs and across the street it had departed and was turning onto 440 East.

But it wasn’t all bad—the sighting inspired the group to head to Hot Diggity Dog, a hotdog place in Nashville that most of us had never been to before. I was especially happy because they offered not only a veggie burger but a veggie dog—something I’d never seen on a menu before. I tried it and I wouldn’t say it was the best fake meat I’ve had (Morningstar Farms chik’n nuggets are my favorite so far), but with the toppings (relish, mustard and celery salt) it was good enough.

Feb. 22 | Smartypants

I’ve been working on a project at work that required some advanced math abilities the other day, and luckily I just happen to be married to a statistician and all-around smartypants. In honor of Ian’s help on the project, today I drank out of this coffee cup that I bogarted from him back when he was in school. (His master’s is in biostatistics.)

Feb. 16 | Fat Tuesday

Feb. 16 | Fat Tuesday

My office is always up for cake, and King Cake for Fat Tuesday is no exception. For the last few years (or maybe more, I’m not sure), the cake has come from Larrivieres in Gallatin and is really, really good.

I have yet to get the baby!

Thanks, that was fun.

Thanks, that was fun.

A big part of work is liking who you work with. I have been lucky to work with several people whom I call my friends. My allies. My partners in shenanigans. My wolfpack.

Friday we said goodbye to Megan, who already is awesome because of her name, but who has been my saving grace many a time at the ole Highwoods building. I haven’t even thought about what I’m going to do when I come in on Monday and there’s no one in our cubicle corner for me to shoot those looks at out of the corner of my eye. Who am I going to run down to P7 with when I’m having a day so shitty that I don’t mind stepping into the cloud of smoke just to get away for five minutes? Who is going to convince me that it’s OK to step away from my desk, I haven’t taken a lunch in three months, and grab a quick lunch at The Local Taco?

Jamie, I’m looking at you.

While they weren't trying to catch the perfect wave

While they weren't trying to catch the perfect wave

I was telling my coworker Ben about my love for Keanu Reeves (shut up), and the discussion spiraled (elevated?) into how Point Break was the best movie ever because it combined Swayze, Keanu and Gary MFing Busey.

Later, Ben sent me this picture for consideration as our official wolfpack logo. Obviously it was approved.

I love that my desk is starting to resemble a demented college kid’s dorm room and nobody seems to care. My coworkers rule.

I take back all the curse words I screamed at Movable Type at the time

I found out today that a website I built won two awards!! We won’t know what level of award (gold, silver or bronze) from each of the award programs until their respective banquets, but just knowing the site won something is enough to make me giddy.

This was the first client site for which I was responsible for the web development (it was designed by my coworker Ben, and Summer, Rex and Megan were responsible for content and overall strategy), and I will not lie: It was overwhelmingly difficult at times. Going from kind of knowing CSS and not ever having built anything in Movable Type to Oh Hi Let Me Build This Site Quickly Now was a challenge, but looking back I see how much I learned from the entire experience.

Luckily I had a lot of support from Patrick (we hired him as a consultant to teach me how to write my own CSS and built in Movable Type–all in like a week) and several super-smart coders and Movable Type users on Twitter who were so responsive and willing to help.

According to the notification we’re not supposed to officially announce anything until the awards are actually given out, so I’m not going to tell you the site name or the awards. I tried to stay as cool and collected as I could at the office—oh who am I kidding, I blabbed to whoever would listen how all those times I said I was going to jump out the window because Movable Type wasn’t working and all those times Ben threatened to kill me because I wouldn’t stop asking for more images in different sizes and colors TOTALLY WORTH IT.

I’m so lucky that I work someplace that lets me do what I am interested in and trusts in me enough to understand that if I don’t know how to do something, I sure as hell will find out. And I’m so proud of the team that worked so hard to make this site so awesome. Even if it didn’t win anything we would still understand its value, but it’s always nice to have validation.

Now, I wonder how I can weasel my way into a trip to accept the awards? ;)
