Chihuly Nights

Chihuly Nights

Thursday after work, Ian and I met up with his dad and his wife at Maggiano’s for a seriously tasty dinner, and then piled in the car and drove down the road to Chihuly Nights at Cheekwood.

It was awesome.

I really don’t know what else to say: The glass installations were beautiful. I’m kind of a glass-whore already, and this exhibit didn’t disappoint. I would imagine seeing it at night made it even more awe-inspiring, despite the spotlight-crazy curator at Cheekwood who apparently thought it would be better to point the blinding spotlights right through the glass up into the patrons’ eyes instead of positioning them at the bottom of each glass piece and shining the light up through the structures.

But what do I know.

They’ve extended the event another week, so if you haven’t gone to see it yet and want to you’ve got another week. Otherwise, you can go look at my photos of our trip there.

Feb. 12 | Mousepath

I thought I had uploaded this back on the 12th, but apparently not.

These are the paths created by my mouse as I worked throughout the day. The larger, darker spots are where my mouse rested. I was doing some coding that day, and when I work in TextMate I have its window on the right side of my screen, which would explain why the mouse was resting often near the left/center of the screen.

Also, that big blob toward the left apparently means I ate lunch that day. For once.

I could have done so much more

Tonight my first assignment for my photo class was due, and I barely scraped nine images together. (Have I mentioned that I’m taking a photography class at Watkins? Maybe that was just on Twitter.) Part of the problem with waiting until the weekend to do everything is that I forgot how lazy I am on the weekend. Also, the weather was shitty so I didn’t really go out anywhere.

Nevertheless, the teacher had some nice things to say about these images. He didn’t say anything negative, which I guess I should be happy about. But I’m taking this class because I want to improve, so some constructive criticism might have been helpful. Believe it or not I’m pretty good at taking criticism—as long as it’s from someone who is clearly an expert on the subject or at least more educated on it than I am. Nothing pisses me off more than someone who knows just as much or less than I do about something trying to tell me how I fucked up.

Anyway, here’s a mosaic of my shots from the first assignment (you can find the full set here). The assignment was to play around with various shutter speeds and see what happens.

It spoke to me

So as you can see from one of my recent posts, I’ve been on a search for art for my living room. We got a new couch and new coffee table, and with that came a new theme. I think of myself as a pretty laid back, earthy chick, and I wanted my new art to reflect that. I didn’t want to decorate with art from a big box store that anyone at any given moment could have, but I also don’t have the funds to drop a few thousand (shit, or a few hundred) on art from a private collection. And honestly, I am just not an art snob. I just wanted to find something that spoke to me.

I asked you, dear Internet, for advice, and BadBadIvy inspired me to give Etsy.com another chance. The site can be a little overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for (and if you don’t have several hours to peruse everything they have to offer), but everything is handmade–and there is just so much talent out there, it’s totally worth it.

I discovered Chaanda’s Etsy shop, and was blown away. Her paintings were exactly what I was looking for. I contacted her to see what was available and to see if she would reproduce one painting that she had already sold (she will!), and Saturday I bought four of her paintings. They are gorgeous, and are inspiring me even before they’re here in my home.

So the moral of the story is, folks, go check out Etsy.com if you’re looking for something you just can’t seem to find around town (it’s not just for art, either). And even if you’re not looking for anything, go check out Chaanda’s shop—she’s super talented (and nice!) and you might see something that inspires you, too.
